Moringa oilseed for men's health: truth or myth?

Moringa Oilseed For Mens Health Truth Or Myth

From time to time, publications appear on the Internet about the next panacea for any disease. Today, there is a lot of talk about the benefits of moringa oilseed for men. Let's figure out how true this information is.

What is moringa?

Moringa oleifera, or Moringa oleifera, is a tree native to northwestern India, valued for its nutritious leaves and purported medicinal properties.

Almost every part of the plant has long been used in herbal medicine to treat over 300 diseases. Although, most of the benefits associated with moringa are limited to test-tube and animal studies and therefore may not extend to humans.

However, of the plant's many researched and promising benefits, some may be beneficial for men.

How is it useful?

Here you'll learn about four benefits of moringa for men, as well as information about its safety and side effects.

Promotes prostate health

The seeds and leaves of moringa are rich in sulfur-containing compounds called glucosinolates, which are thought to have anti-cancer properties. Laboratory studies have shown that glucosinolates from the seeds of the plant inhibit (suppress) the growth of prostate cancer cells.

It is also suggested that moringa may help prevent benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. This condition usually becomes more common with age in men and is characterized by enlargement of this organ, which causes difficulty urinating.

In one study in mice, scientists tested moringa leaf extract with daily testosterone for 4 weeks to induce an enlarged gland. The extract was found to significantly reduce prostate weight. What's more, the extract also reduces levels of prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the prostate gland. High levels of this antigen may be a sign of prostate cancer.

But at the same time, a study showed that the plant reduced testosterone levels in treated mice. In men, low levels of this hormone negatively affect sex drive and erectile function, lead to muscle loss, and cause depression. This property of the plant reduces the effectiveness of testosterone replacement therapy in men with low levels.

Therefore, human studies are needed to determine whether moringa has a beneficial effect on prostate health or lowers testosterone levels in men.

SUMMARY

Moringa leaves and seeds are rich in glucosinolates, which have been linked to the plant's beneficial effects on prostate health in rodents. Researchers have yet to see if this will help people.

Relieve erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or keep an erection strong enough for sex. This condition often occurs when there is a problem with the blood supply to the penis due to high blood pressure, high blood fat, or certain diseases such as diabetes.

Moringa leaves contain beneficial plant compounds called polyphenols, which can increase blood flow by increasing nitric oxide production and lowering blood pressure.

What's more, studies in rats have shown that an extract from the leaves and seeds of the plant inhibits key erection-related enzymes that increase blood pressure and reduce nitric oxide production. Experiments have also shown that moringa seed extract relaxes the smooth muscle of the penis in healthy rats, allowing for greater blood flow. The extract also alleviated erectile dysfunction in diabetic rats.

However, to date, no studies have been conducted on this topic in humans. Thus, it remains unknown whether there is a beneficial effect of moringa on erection in men.

SUMMARY

Moringa seed and leaf extracts have been shown to improve penile circulation in healthy rats and relieve ED in diabetic patients. In the absence of human studies, it is not known whether the plant can help manage impotence in men.

Improves fertility

According to scientists, the occurrence of infertility problems in men in about 40% of cases is associated with a decrease in the body's production of sperm and impaired sperm motility.

Moringa leaves and seeds are excellent sources of antioxidants that can help fight oxidative cell damage that affects sperm production and can damage sperm DNA.

Studies in rabbits showed that the plant's leaf powder significantly improved sperm volume, as well as sperm count and motility. Rat studies also showed that the antioxidant properties of moringa leaf extract significantly increased sperm count in cases of induced undescended testicles.

While these results are promising, human studies are required before conclusions can be drawn about the effectiveness of moringa in improving male fertility.

SUMMARY

Moringa leaves and seeds are rich in antioxidants that neutralize sperm-damaging oxidative stress in rabbits and mice. Human studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Improves blood sugar control

Type 2 diabetes is a condition that occurs when your body doesn't produce enough insulin or can't use it effectively. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to lower blood sugar levels after a meal.

The disease is more common in men than in women. This may be due to the fact that the stronger sex tends to accumulate more harmful visceral fat in the abdominal region, which reduces the effectiveness of insulin, thereby increasing the risk of developing diabetes.

Several studies in diabetic mice and rats have shown that moringa leaf and seed extracts can lower blood sugar by increasing insulin production or cellular uptake of sugar.

One study in 10 healthy adult males showed that taking 4g of moringa leaf powder increased insulin secretion but had no significant effect on blood sugar levels.

In another study, 10 healthy men and 17 with type 2 diabetes received 20 g of leaf powder with meals. Scientists have found that the supplement lowers post-meal blood sugar levels in people with diabetes, but has no effect on those who do not have the disease.

Researchers also reported an unpleasant taste of the supplement, which may affect the consistency of consumption.

While these results are promising, more long-term, high-quality studies in more men are needed before any definitive conclusions can be drawn about the effectiveness of moringa for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

SUMMARY

Moringa leaf powder may lower post-meal blood sugar in men with type 2 diabetes. However, more research is needed before a supplement can be recommended.

Safety and Side Effects

Moringa's long history of use in herbal medicine and as a dietary supplement suggests that the plant is likely safe.

Tests showed no side effects in men who consumed 50 g of powder from the leaves of the plant as a single dose or 7 g per day for 90 days.

Although there is not enough medical evidence to suggest that the herb can provide real health benefits to men, it is nonetheless highly nutritious.

Moringa is sold as a powder, capsule or extract, or as a natural herbal tea.

Men who have low testosterone levels or who are taking medications for high blood pressure or blood sugar should check with their doctor before taking these supplements, as the herb may interfere with how these medications work.

SUMMARY

Moringa leaf appears to be safe with a low risk of side effects. However, men who have certain medical conditions and are taking medication to treat high blood pressure or diabetes should check with their healthcare professional before trying this herbal supplement.
