Erectile dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is not related to a man's ability to ejaculate (ejaculate), just as a good erection does not mean good sperm quality.

Signs of erectile dysfunction

This is a persistent inability to have sexual intercourse due to insufficient tension of the penis. This diagnosis can be made if a man is unable to maintain an erection in at least 1 of 4 intercourse.

Causes of impotence (erectile dysfunction)

Organic reasons:

  • diabetes mellitus causing neuropathy;
  • hypogonadism (decreased testosterone levels due to dysfunction of the pituitary gland or testicles);
  • urological diseases;
  • problems with the vessels of the penis;
  • lesions of the cerebral cortex and centers of regulation of sexual functions located in it;
  • taking certain medications: against high blood pressure, psychotropic, some anticancer drugs, estrogens.

Organic erectile dysfunction is characterized by a gradual onset and steady progression, it manifests itself constantly, and there is no morning and evening erection. Sometimes an erection appears at the beginning of intercourse, but quickly disappears.

Psychogenic Causes:

  • neurosis, depression;
  • stress, fatigue;
  • lack of attraction;
  • sexual intercourse, painful for the man or partner.

Psychogenic Erectile dysfunction usually manifests itself suddenly and sporadically, associated with a specific situation or partner, morning and evening erections may persist. Often organic and psychogenic causes act together, and then they speak of a mixed type of erectile dysfunction (impotence).

Many men believe that an erection must inevitably deteriorate with age. This is not entirely true. It's just that with age, health problems accumulate, which, in turn, can worsen an erection. In addition, the abuse of alcohol and tobacco contributes to impotence.

Treatment of impotence (erectile dysfunction)

Medication

To increase potency, phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (Viagra, Cialis, etc.) are used. They are short-lived and have dangerous side effects.

In some cases, the treatment of impotence comes down to treating the underlying disease that led to it, changing the medication that caused the erectile dysfunction.

Surgical treatment

  • Vascular penile surgery. The purpose of such operations is to restore the flow of arterial blood or to prevent the premature outflow of blood through the dilated veins. The efficiency of such operations is relatively low. Problems usually return after a few years.
  • Falloprosthetics. After installing the implant in the penis, erection is restored in 95% of men. There are different types of implants - plastic and hydraulic. After phalloimplantation, a man experiences orgasms, can conceive a child (if there are no additional problems with sperm quality).
  • Psychotherapy. If it is precisely proven that erectile dysfunction is largely caused by psychogenic causes (20% of all cases), psychodynamic and cognitive psychotherapy methods are used, both individually and together with a partner. Body psychotherapy methods are also used: it helps to release clamps and better control your body.

Quitting bad habits, a healthy lifestyle also help restore an erection.
